WhatsApp Introduces ‘View Once’ Feature for Voice Notes: A Step Towards Enhanced Privacy

The ‘view once’ feature is not entirely new to WhatsApp users. Previously, this feature was available for images and videos, allowing users to send media that could be viewed only once by the recipient. Building on this, WhatsApp is now extending this functionality to audio messages, thereby offering an added layer of privacy for voice notes.
Currently, this feature is in its beta testing phase. WhatsApp’s beta users are the pioneers, getting the first-hand experience of this update. Specifically, the ‘view once’ mode for audio messages is now available to select beta testers on WhatsApp beta for Android (versions 2.23.21.15 and 2.23.22.4) via the Google Play Store. Similarly, iOS users can access it on WhatsApp beta for iOS (version 23.21.1.73) through the TestFlight app.
How Does It Work?
Using this feature is a breeze. Within the voice message chat interface, users will notice a distinct ‘view once’ icon. By tapping on this icon, they can send voice notes in the ‘view once’ mode. What’s crucial to note is that once these voice notes are sent, they cannot be replayed, saved, or shared. This ensures that the content remains private, giving both the sender and the recipient enhanced control over the content.
WhatsApp’s Commitment to Security
WhatsApp’s introduction of the ‘view once’ feature for voice notes is just one of the many steps the platform has taken to enhance security. Recently, the company introduced passkeys for Android users. This feature allows Android users to log back into their accounts securely using passkeys, eliminating the need for the traditional two-factor SMS authentication. Users can now unlock their WhatsApp accounts using their face, fingerprint, or pin.
Furthermore, WhatsApp has plans on the horizon to introduce a new secret code feature for locked chats. This will enable users to set custom passwords for specific chat folders that they wish to keep protected. However, the official release date for this feature remains under wraps.
In a bid to stay updated with the latest technological advancements and provide users with an optimal experience, WhatsApp has also announced its decision to discontinue support for certain older smartphone models, effective from October 24, 2023.
